Is it permissible to abandon prayer to avoid creditors demanding their debts?

Congregational prayer is obligatory for free, adult males. One may be excused from it for a legitimate Shar’i reason. Among these excuses is the fear of a debtor in straitened circumstances from his creditors. This is subject to two conditions: 1. The debtor must genuinely be in straitened circumstances. 2. The harm inflicted upon him must be imprisonment or constant harassment, not merely a demand for payment.

Scholars have adduced as proof for this the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever hears the caller [to prayer] and is not prevented from following him by an excuse — they said: 'And what is the excuse?' He said: 'Fear or illness' — the prayer he prayed will not be accepted from him."
