The answer

The fundamental principle is that the marital relationship should be built on love and mercy, as Allah Almighty says: "And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect." (Ar-Rum 30:21). If a husband dislikes his wife, he must exercise patience and deliberation, and not rush to divorce her. There may be much good in his patience, both in this world and the Hereafter, as Allah Almighty says: "If ye dislike them, it may be that ye dislike a thing, and Allah brings about therein much good." (An-Nisa 4:19). Allah did not obligate love for one's wife, but He did obligate treating her with kindness through financial support, providing shelter, and speaking kindly, and there is a great reward in that.
