Can sin be a trial, and its repetition a sign of Allah's wrath, despite much supplication?

"The estimation of a sin might be a mercy from Allah to the servant, so that he may humble himself and increase in obedience and submission to Allah, or it might be a misery for him. The sinner must repent sincerely and perform good deeds. Supplication alone is not enough; rather, there must be a struggle against one's self. If the servant returns to sin, then let him return to repentance and seeking forgiveness, and let him not tire of them. For Allah forgives sins, no matter how often they are repeated, as long as the servant seeks His forgiveness and repents to Him."
