Does envy lead its possessor to disbelief, God forbid?

Envy can lead to disbelief (kufr), as happened with the People of the Book who envied the Muslims for their faith. Ibn al-Qayyim explained that the Jews of Khaybar and Medina were awaiting the appearance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but when he was sent, their envy and malice led them to disbelieve in him and deny him. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that disbelief, the desire for dominance, and envy – characteristics of Iblis, Pharaoh, and the Jews – prevented them from loving and worshipping Allah. Consequently, their hearts harbored hatred for Allah's pleasure and followed that which angered Him, which constituted a disbelief from which knowledge offered no benefit. Ibn al-Qayyim also clarified that the pillars of disbelief are four: arrogance, envy, anger, and lust.
