What is the ruling on joking about divorce without intending for it to occur?

Divorce does not occur through the phrase spoken by the husband jokingly, because it is a form of narration, not an utterance of creation [of a new state]. The husband should be wary of explicit divorce pronouncements made in jest, for an explicit divorce pronouncement made in jest is effective according to most scholars, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "There are three things which, whether done seriously or in jest, are to be taken seriously: marriage, divorce, and revocation [of divorce]."
