Is it permissible to make a vow to perform an action - even if the condition is not met - so that Allah may grant me something?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

This vow is an absolute vow because its fulfillment was not contingent upon the occurrence of a future event. Rather, it was intended as a means to fulfill a need. The absolute vow is recommended by the Malikis, unlike the restricted vow, which was disliked by the majority of scholars. Ibn Rushd said: The recommended vow is the absolute one, which a man makes obligatory upon himself as gratitude to God for His blessing or for no reason.
