The corruption of religion occurs either through false belief (innovations) or by acting contrary to the true belief (sinfulness of deeds). This leads to two types of temptations: doubts and desires. Doubts are like believing in equality in inheritance, and desires are like looking at unveiled women. Dealing with them involves repelling the greater by enduring the lesser, attaining the greater of two benefits by missing the lesser, and averting the greater of two harms by accepting the lesser. Thus, the wise person is one who knows the better of two good things and the worse of two bad things.
