Is it permissible for me to set aside a portion of my salary for the future? Thank you.

There is no harm in saving money for the future, as long as God's rights in it have been fulfilled, such as paying zakat (definition), and the saver has not been negligent in his duties, such as spending on those whose maintenance is obligatory upon him. Any wealth upon which zakat has been paid is not considered a hoard (كنز). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saved a year's provisions for his family, which is proof of the permissibility of saving, and that it does not contradict reliance on God (Tawakkul (definition)), nor is it limited to a specific number of years.
