Medical treatment is permissible for the preservation of life, and its rulings vary between: obligation (if abandoning it leads to destruction or harm to others, such as contagious diseases), recommendation (for physical weakness), permissibility (in cases other than those mentioned), and detestability (for more severe complications). Despair of healing is not permissible, and doctors should boost the patient's morale. The assessment of a hopeless case is left to the doctors and the possibilities of medicine. The patient's permission is required for treatment if they are of sound mind; otherwise, the permission of their guardian. The guardian may be compelled to seek treatment in certain cases, such as contagious diseases. In critical emergency situations, treatment does not depend on permission. Medical research requires the consent of a fully competent person without coercion or enticement, and it must not result in harm, and it is not permissible on those who lack or have diminished capacity.
