What is the ruling on seeking treatment from a psychiatrist or neurologist, and does this contradict withستر (concealment), patience, and reliance on Allah?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded seeking treatment, and this does not contradict reliance on Allah (); rather, it is a part of its perfection, because it is among taking the commanded means. Authentic Hadiths have proven that for every disease there is a cure, except old age, and that seeking treatment does not contradict Tawakkul, just as repelling hunger and thirst does not contradict it. The reality of is not complete except by directly engaging with the means, and neglecting them blemishes Tawakkul.
Psychological and neurological illnesses fall under the general category of diseases for which a servant is commanded to seek treatment and take means for their cure. Going to a psychiatrist does not contradict Tawakkul; rather, it is a part of its perfection. This also does not conflict with patience, because a patient person is not blamed for seeking healing. Illness is not among the private matters that need to be concealed. One should not mention illness to a creation out of discontent, but mentioning it informatively or for the purpose of seeking treatment is not forbidden.
