What is the interpretation of the phrase "Then the Maghrib came at one time, from which it did not cease," mentioned in the Hadith regarding the prayer times?

The Hadith (definition) of Jibreel, in which he taught the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the prayer times, is considered the most authentic source regarding prayer times. The fact that Jibreel came at only one time for the Maghrib prayer indicates that the time for Maghrib does not change. Scholars who argue that Maghrib has only one time, beyond which it is not permissible to delay it, used this as an evidence. This is the view of most Shafi'is.

However, the verified scholars among the Shafi'is, such as Al-Nawawi, held that the time for Maghrib extends until the disappearance of the twilight (shafaq). Al-Nawawi said, "The time for Maghrib extends until the disappearance of the twilight," and this is the correct or sound view. The answer to the Hadith of Jibreel, which states that the Maghrib prayer on both days was at the same time, is that this was a clarification of the preferred time, or that it was an initial ruling, or that the narrations regarding the extension of its time are more authentic in their chain of transmission.
