Lesbianism is forbidden by Islamic law, and some scholars have considered it a major sin. There is no prescribed punishment (hadd) for it by consensus, because it is not considered zina (illicit sexual intercourse), but discretionary punishment (ta'zir) is applied to stop the perpetrator. The hadith that states: "If a woman comes to a woman, then they are both adulteresses" is weak, and even if it were authentic, its meaning would be zina in terms of sinfulness, not in terms of the prescribed punishment. Whoever is afflicted by it must repent to Allah and treat this ailment by fearing Allah, lowering the gaze, remembering death, engaging in what is beneficial, and hastening to marry. Falling into sins brings about decreed punishments such as the blackening of the face, darkness of the heart, its constriction, its hardening, Allah's abandonment of the servant, the death of the heart, humiliation, decrease in sustenance, the sealing of the heart, and Allah, His angels, and His servants turning away from him.
