Is it sufficient to make up for the fasting days missed due to pregnancy along with offering expiation (kaffarah) for the delay, or is it obligatory to offer expiation for each year of delay?
A pregnant or breastfeeding woman, if she breaks her fast in Ramadan for reasons other than travel, menstruation, or postpartum bleeding, but due to fear for herself, or for her child, or for both of them—which can be known through experience, or reliable medical advice, or strong presumption—then the soundest scholarly opinions state that: if they fear only for the child, they must make up the fast and pay the fidyah (expiation). If they fear only for themselves, or for both themselves and their child, they must only make up the fast. If one delays making up the fast until another Ramadan begins, according to the Hanafis, there is nothing due. According to the other three Imams, if the delay was due to a valid excuse, there is nothing due. If the delay was without a valid excuse, then one must pay fidyah by feeding a poor person for each day. Therefore, the questioner must make up theast days she missed due to pregnancy. She must also pay fidyah if her breaking of the fast was out of fear for her child. If she delayed making up the fast until another Ramadan without a valid excuse, she must feed a poor person for each day. The previous expiation does not suffice for these two expiations.
