Is zakat obligatory on agricultural produce if the cultivation costs were exorbitant and the produce did not yield profits or was at a loss after accounting for land rent, and how is zakat on crops calculated in each case?

If the harvest reaches five wasqs (a nisab), its zakat becomes obligatory, which is one-tenth if irrigated without cost, and one-twentieth if irrigated with cost. The expenses of cultivation or the rent of the land are not deducted from the crop subject to zakat. Rather, zakat becomes obligatory on the entire harvest if it reaches the nisab, without considering what was spent on it. This is the view of the majority of scholars and is the most cautious approach. Allah the Almighty says: "And whatever you spend of anything, He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers," and the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Charity does not decrease wealth."
