How sound is the Hadith: "Whoever awakes in a state of major ritual impurity has awoken having broken his fast"?

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "No, by the Lord of the Kaaba, I did not say: 'Whoever wakes up in a state of janabah should break his fast.' Muhammad (peace be upon him) said it." It is proven in the two Sahih collections that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wake up in a state of janabah, not from a wet dream, and then fast. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) retracted his fatwa on this matter after Umm Al-Mu'minin Aisha and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) clarified it to him. Furthermore, there is a jurisprudential consensus on the permissibility of a fasting person waking up in a state of janabah, then performing ghusl, and completing his fast.

It is permissible for someone who wakes up in a state of janabah to fast and complete his fast without making up for it. This is considered the preponderant and agreed-upon opinion of the majority of jurists, including the four Imams.
