Is the fast of one who woke up moments before Fajr and found a trace whose cause she does not know, suspecting it to be from major ritual impurity (janābah), valid, given that she had already intended to fast and saw in her dream something that aroused desire, knowing that she was unable to perform ghusl or renew her intention? And is ghusl from janābah a condition for the validity of fasting according to the Shafi'is?

The fast of a person in a state of ritual impurity (junub) is valid according to the majority of scholars, including the Shafi'is, and there is no disagreement on this. The evidence for this is the Holy Qur'an and the authentic hadiths from the Prophet, peace be upon him. Among these is what Aisha and Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with them, narrated: that the Prophet, peace be upon him, would wake up in a state of ritual impurity (junub) not due to a wet dream, and then fast. Furthermore, what occurs does not harm the fast if there is doubt whether the discharge is semen or something else, nor is it necessary to renew the intention, nor does a wet dream during the daytime in Ramadan invalidate the fast. One should turn away from obsessive thoughts and not pay attention to them.
