Zakat is obligatory on every grain or fruit that is measurable and storable, such as lentils, cumin, wheat, and barley, even if it is not a staple food. This is the preponderant opinion. Regarding the zakat on what comes forth from the earth, one-tenth is obligatory if it is irrigated without cost, and half of one-tenth if it is irrigated with cost. Expenses and costs incurred for cultivation are not deducted from the obligatory zakat; rather, zakat is due on the entire produce.
