What is the ruling on recovering a loaned amount by force after the debtor has refrained from payment for years, and is it permissible to recover an amount exceeding the original debt?

It is preferable for the owner of a right to reclaim it without resorting to force, such as by raising the matter to the Sharia court. However, if there is no authority and no means other than force to reclaim his right, then he is permitted to use it, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr." The owner of the right must not take more than what is rightfully his.
