Abu Nu'aym narrated in Al-Hilyah, with his chain of transmission, from Ibn Al-Minhal who said: "I saw Abu Al-Aliyah performing ablution, so I said: 'Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves.' He replied: 'The purifiers are not those who purify with water, but rather those who purify themselves from sins.'" As for the wording mentioned in the question, it has not been found.
