Is consuming soft drinks forbidden due to their health harm?
It is impermissible to consume anything that is proven to be harmful to the body, due to the Almighty’s saying: (And do not kill yourselves), and the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: (There shall be no harm or reciprocating harm). So, if it is proven that any drink or food causes certain harm to the body, then its consumption is impermissible. The basic principle concerning foods and drinks is that they are permissible, due to the Almighty’s saying: (It is He who created for you all that is on earth). Therefore, it is not permissible to forbid anything from them except with sound evidence. If the harm of these drinks is proven, then only the harmful amount is forbidden; what is not harmful is not forbidden, and “what is harmful in large quantities is permissible in small quantities.” There is no blame on one who refrains from drinking any of it as a precaution, but it cannot be forbidden without clear evidence.
