I am a young man who does not like to work; is there sin upon me for this?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If abstaining from work leads to the forfeiture of a right or duty, such as a man's failure to provide the obligatory maintenance for his wife or children, then it is a sin. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah will question every guardian about what he was entrusted with: did he preserve it or did he neglect it? This includes a man being questioned about his household." He also said: "It is sufficient sin for a man to neglect those whom he is obliged to support." Ibn Hajar al-Haytami considered withholding maintenance from one's wife and neglecting one's dependents to be among the major sins.
