What is your advice to a friend who curses excessively, and his argument for that is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Curse them, for they are accursed," even though he has been advised without success?

Cursing is of two types: general, directed at disbelievers and those who commit sins, which is permissible; and specific, directed at a particular disbeliever or an individual transgressor, which is a matter of scholarly disagreement, with the preponderant opinion being its prohibition. Excessive cursing is blameworthy, due to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "A believer is not a slanderer nor a curser," and because cursers will not be witnesses or intercessors on the Day of Judgment. The cursing of some disobedient people mentioned in the texts is understood to refer to unspecified individuals, and it is not permissible to curse a specific person. Supplicating good for people is better than cursing them.
