What is the ruling on one who refrains from marriage due to an inability to forget a past experience?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A Muslim should be positive, look to the future, and not dwell on the past, which might dampen their spirits, in accordance with the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both. Strive for that which benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless. If something befalls you, do not say, ‘If only I had done such and such,’ but rather say, ‘Allah has decreed, and He does what He wills,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of Satan.” Therefore, the failure of a previous marriage experience should not prevent one from seeking marriage again, for Allah might have intended good for them or averted evil from them, bearing in mind that marriage is subject to various legal rulings depending on the circumstances.
