What is the religious ruling on working in churches?

It is not permissible to work in churches because they are places where polytheism with God occurs and where the cross is venerated. A Muslim's work in them is considered cooperation in sin and transgression, whether it be building, guarding, or cleaning. It was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians who took the graves of their prophets as places of worship." Scholars have prohibited this. Ibn Taymiyyah and Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on them, issued fatwas against the permissibility of hiring for building a church or synagogue or for serving it. The purpose of this prohibition is for a Muslim not to assist the people of falsehood in their falsehood. Whoever works in a church sees great abominations and is not allowed to remain silent about them, and he may be tempted by their falsehood. The prohibition of working in churches is not limited to making crosses and drawings, but includes everything that benefits the people of falsehood and aids them in their falsehood.
