Is the fear of death, which reaches the point of despair and prevents one from sitting alone at home, a satanic whisper (waswasah) aimed at keeping a person away from prayer and reading the Qur’an? And does reading Surah Al-Mulk treat this fear, despite the certainty that death comes by God’s decree?

Fear of death should be a motivation to prepare for the afterlife, to increase good deeds, to repent, and to practice asceticism in this world. If it leads one away from prayer and reciting the Quran, then this indicates the presence of another deterrent besides the thought of death. There is no evidence that fear can be cured by reciting Surat Al-Mulk, despite its mentioned virtues. It is advised to seek refuge from Satan, to associate with righteous women, to read books of encouragement, deterrence, and biographies, to remember that death will not be delayed, and to frequently remember death as recommended by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
