The question

What is the ruling on the prayer of someone who entered the mosque after the Maghrib prayer had concluded, and one of the worshippers prayed with him with the intention of supererogation to attain the reward of congregational prayer? And what is the intention of the one performing supererogatory prayer? And what is the ruling on two congregations praying in one mosque? And what is the ruling on our prayer if we were the first congregation? And must the other congregation interrupt their prayer if they have said the opening takbeer? And is it permissible for a follower to interrupt his prayer to pray with the first congregation and abandon his imam?

The answer

Ibn Muflih holds that the intention for repeating the prayer is for it to be a supererogatory (nafl) prayer. As for the Maliki school, there are several opinions: whether one should intend it as an obligatory (fard) prayer, or a supererogatory prayer, or to complete the obligatory prayer, or to leave the matter to Allah. According to Al-Shafi'i, one should intend it as an obligatory prayer, and some of them believe one should intend it as Dhuhr or Asr, while some Shafi'is hold that both are obligatory. Repeating the Maghrib prayer is a matter of disagreement. It is preferable for the two individuals who arrived late to join the existing congregation, and it is not permissible for them to break their prayer after the opening takbir, due to Allah's prohibition against nullifying deeds.
