Is Hajj superior, or is Umrah during Ramadan and performing Qiyam (night prayers) in the last ten days of the Grand Mosque (Haram Makkah)?

Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam. It involves specific acts of worship and has immense virtue, for "an accepted Hajj has no reward but Paradise." As for Umrah, there is disagreement regarding its obligation, and it is lesser in virtue than Hajj. However, Umrah performed in Ramadan has a special virtue, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "An Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to a Hajj." Scholars have differed in interpreting this equivalence. Some view it literally, due to the added honor of the time (Ramadan) and the acts of worship associated with it. Others believe that it does not necessarily mean it equals the reward of Hajj in every respect, and that its meaning is that the performer of Umrah will be credited with the reward of a Hajj, but will never be considered as having performed Hajj itself. This is similar to the Prophet's statement, peace and blessings be upon him, about reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, that it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran—meaning in reward, but not in all aspects.
