Is it obligatory to inform a suitor about the presence of a mental illness (bipolar mood disorder), and when and how should he be informed, given the fear of his rejection or the spread of the news?

The majority of scholars hold that defects necessitating annulment (faskh), which must be disclosed before marriage, are those that prevent intercourse or are repulsive and contagious diseases like leprosy (baras) and elephantiasis (judham). Some scholars are of the view that any defect causing one spouse to be repulsed by the other necessitates annulment and must be disclosed. The fatwa (religious legal opinion) issued is in accordance with the opinion of the majority. There is no obligation to inform the suitor about an illness unless it is severe and reaches the level of insanity; in such a case, disclosure is obligatory, even if the symptoms appear intermittently. It is preferable, however, to inform him about the illness absolutely during or before the engagement.
