Zakat is obligatory on deposits if they reach the [nisab] (minimum threshold) and a [hawl] (one lunar year) has passed over them. The fact that you intend to use the money for your expenses does not prevent the obligation of Zakat. Debts are deducted from the money before Zakat is paid, and the remainder is subject to Zakat if it reaches the nisab. As for profits, they are subject to Zakat along with the principal capital if they result from a permissible investment. If the profits are from usury (riba) or an illicit investment, they must be disposed of by giving them to the poor and needy, while refraining from forbidden dealings. It is permissible to deal with Islamic banks for investment deposits, and the profits are subject to Zakat along with the principal capital after deducting debts.
