Is it permissible to record the voice of the Imam during prayer without his knowledge?
It is incumbent upon one who enters prayer to have a present heart and humility. Recording sound with a mobile phone contradicts humility in prayer, and it may lead to many actions that invalidate it. Scholars have agreed that continuous, excessive action invalidates prayer, though they differed on the precise definition of excessive and little, with the common understanding being the reference point. As for recording the Imam's voice without his knowledge, if he has given permission for it, there is no harm. If he has forbidden it, then it is not permissible. If his consent or prohibition is unknown, it is safer not to proceed with recording unless after obtaining his permission. As for recording his voice and publishing it, it is not permissible except with his permission.
