Is it permissible to buy and sell expensive, distinctive phone numbers, given that these numbers are easy to remember and beneficial for companies and merchants, and not merely a form of extravagance?

Purchasing special numbers that people boast about is a form of foolishness and extravagance, which is forbidden in Islamic law. It may even reach the point of being prohibited, because Allah the Almighty has forbidden extravagance and squandering. He described those who squander as brothers of devils and stated that He does not love the extravagant. In support of this, scholars have issued fatwas (religious edicts) prohibiting it.

Furthermore, it is not unlikely that purchasing these numbers for boasting falls under the category of "libās al-shuhrah" (clothing of fame/vanity), which is prohibited. However, if these numbers are bought by companies and institutions that need them, and it does not reach the point of prohibited extravagance, then there is no objection to that. Selling prohibited numbers is aiding in a forbidden act, so a Muslim must abandon that.
