What are the rulings concerning an insane person and how they should be dealt with?

Insanity is a disorder of the mind or distinguishing faculty. An insane person is not required to perform physical acts of worship, but zakat is obligatory upon him if he possesses wealth, and it is to be disbursed on his behalf by his guardian. He is also liable for fines and compensation for damages. His Islam is affirmed if one of his parents is Muslim, and Paradise is hoped for him. He is placed under interdiction, and his verbal dispositions, such as selling, divorcing, and gifting, are not valid. Insanity is considered a defect in marriage. He is not subject to retribution (qisas) or penal laws (hudud). An insane person inherits, and his guardian manages his wealth according to what is in his best interest. His wealth is inherited after his death.
