What is the ruling on initiatives that include specific litanies of seeking forgiveness, and certain acts such as the Sayyid al-Istighfar supplication, listening to daily clips, the repentance prayer, reviewing a list of sins, and performing a daily act that leads to forgiveness, along with presenting a certificate of appreciation to those who adhere to them?

We believe that the aforementioned act may be an innovation (bid'ah) or a path leading to it, because it is a specific act of worship (seeking forgiveness and prayer) performed in a particular manner without any religious evidence. It is feared that it falls under the category of an 'additive innovation,' and therefore, it should be abandoned. For accustoming oneself to repentance and seeking forgiveness is not achieved by introducing innovations. Many innovations arise from such a notion of 'good innovation' (istihsan), then they spread and become commonly practiced until they are considered part of the religion and a followed sunnah.
