Praying for guidance for people of innovation (Ahl al-Bid'ah) is a good thing, and it is permissible to seek forgiveness for those whose innovation is not a disbelief-inducing one. It is also permissible to seek intercession through good deeds, such as supplication and seeking forgiveness, with the intention of their guidance.
