Why did the Prophet choose Bilal ibn Rabah as the first muezzin?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, chose Bilal as his muezzin because of his loud and melodious voice. It is preferable for the that the person have the loudest voice, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Abdullah ibn Zayd: "Impart it to Bilal, for he has a more melodious voice than you."
