The question

How can the outcome of Istikhara be a feeling of relief in the heart if the available options are divorce or living without hope of motherhood, accompanied by a dread of what is to come? And is considering some events as signs for Istikhara sufficient to make a decision of separation?

The answer

Istikhara (prayer for guidance) is prescribed for permissible matters. The predominant view is that a person should proceed with the matter after performing Istikhara and should not abandon it unless Allah diverts them from it. So, do what seems best to you after performing Istikhara, and its outcome will be good for you, by Allah's permission.

It is permissible for you to seek divorce or khul' from your sterile husband due to the harm you incur. However, your patience with him and treating him with kindness will be greatly rewarded, for Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, he who fears Allah and remains patient, then verily, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good" (Yusuf: 90).

Consider the matter after consultation and Istikhara, seek Allah's help, and accustom yourself to contentment and submission to what He decrees for you.
