"Complementary interests (Maṣāliḥ Taḥsīniyyah) involve securing benefits or averting harms, aiming to uphold excellent customs and noble character. They are not matters of necessity or need. These interests can be either a command (entailing obligation or recommendation) or a prohibition (entailing proscription or discouragement). There is no contradiction between the dowry (mahr) and the wedding feast (walimah (definition)); for the dowry is an obligatory right for the wife, and the walimah is a confirmed Sunnah (definition), which can be a simple affair such as two measures of barley or a sheep, depending on one's capacity."
