The answer

Divorce, once issued, cannot be revoked, even if uttered in jest. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There are three things serious in earnest and serious in jest: divorce, emancipation, and رجعة (taking back a divorced wife)." And his saying: "There are three things in which there is no room for play: divorce, marriage, and emancipation." Scholars have unanimously agreed that if the explicit words of divorce are uttered by a sane, adult individual, then he is held accountable for them. A man may reconcile with his wife before the expiry of her ' (waiting period) if it was the first or second divorce, or through a new marriage contract after the 'iddah, or through a new marriage contract if he divorced her before consummating the marriage. However, if it was the third divorce, she becomes unlawful for him until she marries another husband.
