If a wife dislikes her husband and fears falling short in her duties towards him, it is permissible for her to seek khul' from him in exchange for a compensation. This compensation may be small or large, provided the wife agrees to the increase. It is unlawful for the husband to oppress his wife or harm her in order to force her to ransom herself from him. It is advisable for wise individuals to intervene to reconcile or to separate them amicably. Otherwise, the matter should be referred to the court.
