How can a woman obtain a divorce or khul' from her husband who refuses it and threatens to leave her in a state of suspension, knowing that the dowry was a copy of the Quran and a sum of money, and that the husband is demanding a large sum in exchange for the divorce?

If a wife dislikes her husband and fears falling short in her duties towards him, it is permissible for her to seek khul' from him in exchange for a compensation. This compensation may be small or large, provided the wife agrees to the increase. It is unlawful for the husband to oppress his wife or harm her in order to force her to ransom herself from him. It is advisable for wise individuals to intervene to reconcile or to separate them amicably. Otherwise, the matter should be referred to the Sharia (definition) court.
