The answer

If the presence of boys and girls in a place leads to prohibited mixing (ikhtilat) and a failure to adhere to Islamic guidelines, then it is not permissible to participate in this activity. However, if the Islamic guidelines for the gathering of men and women are met, then there is no harm in participating. It is important to note that the suitor (khatib) is considered a stranger (ajnabi) before the marriage contract; therefore, it is not permissible to be in seclusion with him, or to see what is not permissible for a stranger to see, or to exceed the bounds of permissible communication.
