The question

Is it permissible for a woman to marry without a specified dowry, especially if the bride's family refuses this on the claim that she is "given to Sayyid Abd al-Qadir," and the groom's family suggests declaring a nominal dowry of 100,000 Algerian dinars before people and the Imam?

The answer

A woman is entitled to a dowry, whether small or large, that is stipulated for her. Scholars have unanimously agreed on its establishment and obligation for the wife from her husband once a valid marriage contract is concluded. They have also unanimously agreed that there is no maximum limit for it, and the preponderant opinion, held by the majority of scholars, is that there is no minimum limit for it either.

A marriage is valid even without specifying the dowry, but the wife is entitled to the dowry of her peers if her husband consummates the marriage with her. If the woman waives her dowry after it has been stipulated, it is waived from the husband.

It must be noted that the gifting of a newborn girl to one of the awliya' (guardians/saints) is an innovation in religion, has no basis in Islamic law, and is not rationally sound.
