Is it permissible to marry someone who insists on moving to live in a foreign country for five years and leaving their job, and refuses to give the mahr on the grounds that marriage is not a transaction of buying and selling?

If the suitor is a person of religious commitment and good character, it is advisable to accept him, unless traveling to another country is unbearable for the woman. A woman must obey her husband if he orders her to leave her job, but she can stipulate in the marriage contract that she not be prevented from working. The mahr (dowry) is a right of the woman, and she has the right to refuse her husband until she receives it. It is one of the marital rights that result from marriage. It is advisable to consult with family and those who know the man's situation, along with seeking Allah's guidance (istikharah), before accepting or rejecting.
