Is refusing to pay a large sum for an expensive wedding feast, based on custom and not Sunnah, considered disobedience to the father (عقوقًا للوالد), given the fear of this affecting success and provision, despite possessing the money and desiring to save?

The wedding feast (walima) is a Sunnah (definition) according to the majority of scholars, and extravagance in it is not permissible, due to Allah's prohibition of it and because the blessing in marriage lies in facilitating the expenses. Therefore, it is advisable to hold a walima that pleases the father without extravagance, while obeying parents in matters that do not involve disobedience to Allah. One should also be keen on spending without extravagance or stinginess, for there is reward and compensation from Allah in it, and for the blessing of obeying parents, which is one of the greatest causes of success. The father can be discussed with wisely and gently to express the desire to obey him without falling into a forbidden religious matter.
