The question

Is it permissible for the husband to incline towards his second wife in treatment and affection more than the first, justifying that by the first one being the favored one, more beautiful, younger, and having more children, and that she treats him better than the second, all in order not to make the second wife feel jealous, knowing that his marriage to the second one has not completed a year?

The answer

A husband must be just between his wives in the obligatory maintenance and in lodging. However, he is not obligated to be just in intercourse and types of enjoyment, nor in gifts and grants that exceed the obligatory maintenance; rather, it is recommended. The husband should strive to be just in apparent matters, due to the resentment that tilting towards one of them may cause in the heart of the other.
