Is a husband sinful if he causes the divorce of his wife, who is characterized by neglect and problem-making, and who exposes him and his belongings to her family?

The foundation of married life is mutual understanding, fulfilling rights and obligations, and making religion the basis of interaction between spouses. The wife mentioned has acted wrongly, disobeyed her Lord, and fallen short in her husband's rights. This is an act of nushuz (rebellion) that forfeits her right to maintenance and housing. The ruling on a rebellious wife and how to deal with her has been previously explained. The husband is advised to make one final attempt to reform her and remind her of Allah's rights and the husband's rights. Intervention by some people of wisdom can also be sought. If she does not respond after exhausting all attempts, there is no sin upon him in divorcing her. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Three supplicate to Allah, the Almighty, and He does not answer them: a man who had under him a ill-tempered wife and did not divorce her..." The meaning of the hadith (definition) is that Allah does not answer the supplication of one who supplicates against his ill-tempered wife, because he is tormenting himself by living with her. Furthermore, the continuation of marriage with bad companionship and constant dispute can be pure corruption and harm. As for the husband's saying to his wife "as you wish" in response to her saying "I want a divorce," if he intended to effect a divorce, then it occurs; otherwise, nothing is upon him.
