What is the ruling on a husband who deliberately provokes his wife's anger and psychological breakdown, then punishes her for her reaction with abandonment and a demand for divorce, claiming that the reason is her nervousness?
The relationship between spouses is based on living together amicably and reciprocal kindness. Mistreating one's wife is not characteristic of the righteous, and a husband is responsible for his wife. A husband deliberately provoking his wife's anger is a despicable act. Addressing a wife raising her voice should be done by admonishing and reminding her. It is also advised to be patient with the husband's mistreatment and to repel it with kindness, to avoid anger and follow the prophetic guidance when angry, to advise the husband and remind him of Allah's rights, and to supplicate for Allah to improve the husband's character.
