The answer

The basic ruling on practicing sports like running and swimming is permissibility. However, if it leads to weakening the fasting person from performing Taraweeh prayers, it becomes disliked (). If it leads to physical weakness and the need to break the fast, or to negligence in performing obligatory congregational prayers, then it is forbidden (). But if it does not lead to abandoning an obligation or missing out on a virtuous act, then there is no harm in it. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen mentioned that excessive practice of these sports is considered a waste of time, whereas moderate practice for the purpose of physical exercise and recreation is permissible. It is advisable to avoid strenuous sports during the day. The best time to practice them is just before or two to three hours after it, in well-ventilated places, and they should be light and not exhausting, and done in moderation so as not to distract from more important matters.
