What is the required financial amount to feed 60 needy people as an expiation for intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan, and is the amount of 1200 US dollars sufficient for both the husband and wife?
You and your wife must engage in sincere repentance and make up that day. You are unanimously obliged to offer expiation. Scholars have differed on whether expiation is obligatory for the obedient wife, but it is safer for her to offer it. It is not permissible to feed the poor if you are able to fast. If you are unable to fast, then you may feed the poor. It is not permissible to give the monetary value [of the food] or to give food to fewer than sixty needy persons. The obligatory amount for each needy person is a mudd of food (750 grams) of rice or similar staple. Others hold that the obligatory amount is half a saa’ (approximately 1.5 kilograms), which is safer. If you cannot find needy persons to whom you can give the food, you may follow the opinion of those who permit giving the monetary value, and this value is estimated at the price of the food you would pay for the expiation.
