The answer

Some scholars have held that making up the six days of Shawwal is not prescribed, because they are a restricted to a specific time, and their virtue is not attained outside of Shawwal. However, it is hoped that whoever missed fasting them will attain their reward through their intention. Others have held that it is recommended to make them up in Dhul-Qa'dah. The summary is that it is preferable and better to make up the missed day from the six days to attain the full reward.
