Does swallowing phlegm before it reaches the mouth, sometimes without feeling it, break the fast of a fasting person?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Swallowing phlegm before it reaches the mouth does not invalidate the fast, and similarly, swallowing it unintentionally. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on intentionally swallowing it after it has reached the mouth, and the preponderant opinion is that it does not invalidate the fast. However, it is more cautious to avoid it to steer clear of the disagreement. An ordinary person (layman) in matters of disagreement should follow someone whose knowledge and piety they trust.
